Top Five Reasons Your Cat Won’t Take Off Its Harness Before Landing

Many owners ask us why their cat refuses to take off the harness after training. The answer is more complicated than you might expect. Here are the top five reasons, drawn from years of careful observation and a few unrelated naps.

1. It is a uniform

A harness is not a restraint. It is a symbol of belonging. Cadets who wear the harness feel official. They stand taller. They walk more slowly. Taking it off is like resigning from a career. Most cadets would rather sleep in it than lose their rank.

2. It has a clip

Clips are shiny, and shiny things are interesting. A cat wearing a clip will spend hours looking at it, tapping it and trying to remove it. The clip is both a toy and a challenge. Taking off the harness would end the game.

3. It has a smell

A harness picks up the smells of every adventure. The grass, the sofa, the shed, the neighbour’s dog. To a cat, it is a diary. Removing it is like throwing away a memoir. The cadet would prefer to keep it until the final chapter.

4. It is warm

Straps wrap around the chest and shoulders. They hold in warmth. On cold days, a harness is a snug jumper. A cadet in a harness may be seen sitting by a radiator with an expression of deep calm and a faint smell of sunshine.

5. It reminds them of you

This is the most important reason. A harness is a connection. It tells the cadet that someone is nearby. Someone trusting. Someone with a hand on the strap. The cadet may pretend to be independent, but a small part of them likes it. Please do not tell them we said this.

What to do

  • Respect the harness
  • Remove it gently, when asked
  • Offer a treat afterward
  • Never remove it while the cadet is on the wardrobe

A final note

The Academy asks all owners to follow local guidance and consult a real vet or trainer about harnesses, outdoor safety and cat care. This is a parody, and we are cats, not experts. We are, however, very sure about the uniform.
